  • Testing coverage (Ontario): In-lab Level 1 sleep studies are publicly funded by OHIP when medically indicated. Mail-out HSATs are typically private-pay.
  • Equipment funding: After a qualifying diagnosis, Ontario’s Assistive Devices Program (ADP) helps fund PAP equipment after a Level 1 test—not after a level 3 diagnostic test, such as the WatchPAT ONE.
  • Consults: Available only for Ontario residents. With a valid referral, virtual consultations are OHIP-covered.

Signs You Might Have Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is far more than just a sleep disorder; it's a significant risk factor for a host of serious cardiovascular problems. The repeated interruptions in breathing and subsequent drops in oxygen levels during sleep place immense stress on the heart. If left untreated, sleep apnea can cause:

  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Increased risk of recurrent heart attack and stroke
  • Irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias)
  • Strain on cardiovascular system leading to heart disease

HSAT - Frequently Asked Questions

Collapsible content

How do I check for sleep apnea at home?

We ship you a Home Sleep Apnea Test (HSAT) kit. You wear simple sensors for one night in your own bed; your data is analyzed and reviewed by a sleep physician. If sleep apnea is confirmed, we discuss treatment and next steps.

Is a home sleep apnea test accurate?

When used in the right patients (suspected obstructive sleep apnea and minimal comorbidities), HSAT is a validated approach and physician-interpreted. If results are inconclusive or suggest central apnea, an in-lab polysomnography may be recommended. [PubMed].

Do I need a doctor's referral to order the test?

No—self-referrals are accepted. With your consent, we’ll share results with your family doctor and coordinate care.

If you do have a doctor's referral, a virtual consultation can be covered by OHIP.

Who is eligible for an at-home test?

Adults who suspect obstructive sleep apnea, without significant cardiopulmonary/neuromuscular diseases. If you’re unsure, ask and we'll help guide you.

What does a home sleep study measure?

Breathing patterns, oxygen levels, heart rate, sleep/wake time, and event indices (e.g., AHI/RDI). Your report is interpreted by a physician with clear next-step guidance.

How long does it take to get results?

Most reports are ready in as little as 48 hours after your test uploads successfully. If data is incomplete, we’ll contact you quickly to sort it out (and arrange a re-test if needed).

Is the HSAT covered by insurance or ADP (Ontario)?

HSAT itself isn’t covered by ADP. Some private plans may reimburse; we provide an itemized receipt.

What if my results show sleep apnea?

If your test confirms sleep apnea, your report will include a physician’s diagnosis and treatment recommendations. At Canadian CPAP Equipment, you can choose to book a virtual consultation where a doctor can issue a CPAP prescription if needed. From there, our Respiratory Therapist provides ongoing support, helping you get started with the right equipment and monitoring your progress. Virtual follow-up appointments are available.

What's the difference between home sleep testing and in-lab sleep studies?

Home sleep testing focuses specifically on sleep apnea detection using portable devices, while in-lab studies monitor a broader range of sleep parameters. Our home sleep testing approach allows you to sleep naturally in your own environment, which often provides more accurate results for sleep apnea diagnosis than trying to sleep normally in an unfamiliar clinic setting.

Can I do home sleep testing anywhere in Ontario?

Absolutely! We ship our home sleep testing kits to every location across Ontario - from major cities like Toronto, Ottawa, and Hamilton to rural communities in Northern Ontario. The kit typically arrives within 1-2 business days, and you can complete your home sleep testing wherever you sleep most comfortably.

How does home sleep testing compare to lab studies?

Home sleep testing offers several advantages over traditional lab studies. This includes the device, professional interpretation by licensed Ontario respirologists, comprehensive results, and consultation support. Many patients find home sleep testing provides excellent value while delivering reliable diagnostic accuracy.

What happens during my home sleep testing consultation?

Following your home sleep testing, you can book an optional virtual consultation with our respirologist for proper medical oversight. During this consultation, we discuss your results, explore treatment options, and provide a CPAP prescription if sleep apnea is detected. Virtual consultations can be covered by OHIP with a doctor's referral.

Is home sleep testing as reliable as traditional sleep studies?

Many patients actually get more reliable results with home sleep testing because they sleep more naturally in their familiar environment. Our device captures the essential breathing metrics that our licensed Ontario respirologists need for accurate sleep apnea diagnosis, without the discomfort of multiple wires and unfamiliar clinic settings.

What support do I receive with my home sleep testing?

We provide comprehensive support throughout your home sleep testing journey. This includes pre-test setup guidance, professional analysis by licensed Ontario respirologists in as little as 48 hours, results explanation, optional virtual consultations for treatment planning, and therapy support afterwards. Our team ensures you understand your results and can connect you with ongoing CPAP therapy if needed.
