Frequently Asked Questions - Automatic CPAP Machines

What is an APAP machine (auto-CPAP)?

An APAP automatically adjusts pressure within a clinician-set range to keep your airway open as needs change through the night and over time.

APAP vs CPAP—what’s the difference?

CPAP uses one fixed pressure; APAP auto-adjusts. Many adults with OSA prefer APAP for variable needs (position, congestion, weight gain/loss). Your clinician can confirm suitability.

Do I need a prescription in Canada to buy APAP?

Yes, a prescription is required to buy an APAP machine in Canada. Coverage (e.g., Ontario ADP and private insurance) also requires a physician diagnosis with prescription.

Does APAP include humidifier/heated tubing?

Many full-size units include an integrated humidifier and optional heated tube to reduce dryness. See each product’s “Included with your purchase” section to confirm.

Will APAP work with my current mask?

Generally yes—APAP is mask-agnostic with standard tubing. Choose nasal, pillows, or full face based on fit and comfort.

Can I travel with APAP?

Yes—APAP is considered medical equipment for air travel. Some models support external batteries (check airline and battery rules).

APAP (Auto-CPAP) machines in Canada — expert guidance

Reviewed by Brendan Scales, RRT (Registered Respiratory Therapist).

How APAP works:

An APAP (auto-adjusting CPAP) continuously adapts pressure within a clinician-set min–max range to keep your airway open as needs change through the night (sleep stage, meds, position, congestion). Modern algorithms respond to signs like snoring, flow limitation, and obstructive events, raising or lowering pressure to maintain a stable airway.

Who APAP is for:

Adults with obstructive sleep apnea who experience variable pressure needs—e.g., back vs side sleeping, seasonal allergies, weight changes, or meds that affect airway stability. If you’re new to therapy and eligible, APAP can improve comfort while your optimal pressure is identified.

When APAP may not be right:

Significant central sleep apnea, some hypoventilation disorders, or certain cardiopulmonary conditions may warrant other modes (e.g., BiPAP Machine). Your clinician or RRT should confirm suitability.

Set-up & features that matter:
Start with the prescribed min–max. Then compare practical features:
• Humidifier & heated tubing to reduce dryness and “rainout.”
• Quiet operation for bedroom comfort.
• Ramp/pressure relief for easier falling asleep.
• App/portal data so you and your provider can review usage and efficacy.
• Size & power if you plan to travel or pair with a battery.

Mask compatibility & leaks:
APAP works with most masks using standard tubing. Choose nasal, nasal pillow, or full face based on mouth breathing and comfort. Replace cushions on schedule and review fit tips to reduce leaks and dry mouth. Prefer to avoid magnets? Look for magnet-free mask options.

Data, follow-up, and results:
With your consent, an RRT/clinician can review secure data to fine-tune your min–max range and comfort settings. Small adjustments to minimum pressure, EPR/pressure relief, or humidification can significantly improve sleep continuity and adherence.

Travel & batteries:
Most APAP devices are airline-friendly medical equipment; carry your prescription when you fly. Some models support external batteries (note: many batteries ship by ground only, and run time varies). If portability is a priority, compare with travel CPAP options.

Prescription & coverage in Canada:
A prescription is required to purchase APAP. Provincial programs (e.g., Ontario ADP) and private insurers generally require a diagnosis/prescription for funding or reimbursement. Check your clinic’s Funding & Insurance details.

Getting started

  • Confirm APAP suitability with your clinician.
  • Choose a device with the comfort features you’ll actually use (humidifier, heated tubing, quiet profile).
  • Pair with a well-fitting mask and replace cushions on schedule.
  • Review your data with an RRT to optimize settings and stay comfortable long-term.
