Why Clean Your PAP Equipment?

Taking good care of your PAP machine is essential for effective therapy. Not only does it eliminate any odours or build-up, but it can help to avoid skin discomfort and irritation to ensure optimal performance to help you fall asleep quicker and easier. 

Cleaning your equipment routinely can also be cost efficient. The premature
breakdown of equipment can be attributed in part to poor maintenance. 

If we don't take care of our equipment?

  • Weakened seals and diminished performance
  • Mineralization and buildup within the equipment
  • Bacteria, fungus, and mold exposure
  • Aggravated allergy symptoms
  • Sinus and throat irritation
  • Musty or foul odours
  • Premature equipment failure
  • Voiding your manufacturer’s warranty

Daily Maintenance

Daily Cleaning:

  • Wash your mask, cushion, and headgear daily with mild soap and warm water. Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry.
  • Empty and rinse the water chamber of the humidifier daily. Allow it to air dry away from direct sunlight.

Distilled Water vs Regular Water

Distilled Water

  • Using distilled water will help you keep a clean breathing environment and maintain the longevity of your chamber.

Regular Water

  • Can contain microorganisms and when combined with moisture and heat, can become a breading ground for their proliferation.
  • Mineral deposits like Calcium, Magnesium and Sodium can cause accumulation and premature breakdown of your equipment.
  • Mineral accumulation can also cause airway irritation over time.

Weekly Maintenance

Weekly Cleaning:

  • Disassemble the mask, cushion, headgear, and tubing. Soak them in a solution of warm water and mild detergent for 15-30 minutes.
  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water and allow all components to air dry completely before reassembly.

Monthly Cleaning & maintenance Tasks

  1. Replace your machine’s disposable filter (if applicable.)
  2. Inspect your mask, headgear, water tanks, and accessories for signs of wear. Replace damaged or compromised parts when possible.
